Step by step

  1. Decide what you need to frontline. Choose which argument is your best one to go for, and how far you need to collapse.
  2. Read their case. What are they going for, which contention is the biggest threat to you, and what are your cleanest responses to it?
  3. Compare your offense. Compare your offense with theirs and decide how you will weigh them.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to extend everything.
  • New arguments that were never in the rebuttal.
  • No clear story of the round.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a summary in Public Forum?

Three minutes in the standard NSDA format.

When does the summary happen?

After the second rebuttal and its crossfire. The grand crossfire and the final focus follow it.

Can I read new arguments in the summary?

New arguments are generally not accepted this late. Extend what was already in the rebuttals and constructives. Check your judge’s paradigm and your league’s rules.
