Step by step

  1. Start on your own case. You win far more rounds on your case than on theirs, so don’t run short of time on your likeliest path to the ballot.
  2. Pick your collapse. Can you frontline several contentions, or all of your case? If not, choose the argument you will go for.
  3. Split your time. Spend about 2 minutes on your case and 2 on theirs, at most.

What the speech does

A second rebuttal is a 4-minute speech that frontlines the responses to your case and answers your opponent’s case.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring the frontlines to chase their case.
  • Dropping an argument by accident.
  • Leaving no time for an overview.

Frequently asked questions

Who gives the second rebuttal in Public Forum?

The team that spoke second in the constructives. It follows the first rebuttal, so it is the first speech where that team answers the responses made to its case.

How long is a second rebuttal?

Four minutes in the standard NSDA format. Check your tournament’s rules for any change.

Do I have to frontline everything?

No. Many teams choose which contentions to frontline and collapse to the ones they plan to win. What you choose to leave out should be a decision, not an accident.
